Title | Edward Hitchcock sermon notes, 1849 January 12 |
Dates | 1849-01-12 |
Abstract | Sermons notes by Edward Hitchcock for a sermon delivered at Amherst College on January 12th, 1849 and again on January 19, 1854 and January 30, 1862, in which he uses the story of Nehemiah to discuss the proper course of thought and action in promoting a cause, specifically a religious one. Nehemiah mused on his condition and on that of others until he felt it deeply, which allowed him to bring his thoughts and prayers before God. This allowed him to then successfully share his plans with others through discussion, prayer, and preaching. Because he entrusted the situation to God beforehand and was spiritually empowered, Nehemiah was prepared to lead his followers and defy any enemies. Hitchcock hopes that those in his community will act similarly, and will achieve similarly impressive results. Hitchcock has written related hymns on the final page of the inner signature. |
