Date Note
Although this portrait bears the date 1884, John Rietz suggests in his article "Another Whitman Photograph: The Gurney and Rockwood Sessions Reconsidered," this portrait may be from a sitting with Jeremiah Gurney & Son in 1871 or 1872, with this print made by Rockwood at a later date. The New York Public Library also holds a copy of this portrait, and dates it to a sitting with Rockwood in 1871. Whitman's signature is beneath the portrait. The front of the card has detached from its backing, as evidenced from the oval fading around the portrait.
