Abstract
A draft by Edward Hitchcock of his "Ichnology of New England: A Report on the Sandstone of the Connecticut Valley, Especially its Fossil Footmarks." The draft opens with a letter to Henry J. Gardner, Governor of Massachusetts, dated April 1, 1857, in which Hitchcock explains the geological work he has been doing for the state and introduces the report. A bibliography of works discussing North American fossil footprints is included, followed by the contents list and the report itself. At the end of the report is a glossary of terms, a description of the plates, a numbered index, and a postscript titled "Who first examined scientifically & described the fossil footmarks in this country?" Hitchcock has numbered the draft; a few pages are missing from this draft, including the page range 187-228.
