Abstract
A manuscript draft by Edward Hitchcock of a lecture included in his work "The Religion of Geology and its Connected Sciences." This lecture, "The Hypothesis of Creation by Law," is labeled as the eighth, but it is the ninth in the final published work. Hitchcock discusses the relationship between religion and geology while also discussing the relationship between religion and science in general. This lecture focuses on the hypothesis of creation by law, a hypothesis Hitchcock says is by an anonymous writer and combines other scientists' hypotheses about the creation and evolution of life with ideas about spontaneous generation and transmutation. Hitchcock explains the hypothesis and puts forth arguments against it, providing his own explanations about creation, the laws of the universe, and the laws of God.
