Dates | 1822-11 |
Abstract | Edward Hitchcock's sermon on the relationship between Christ and the church, based on Revelation 19:7 - "The marriage of the Lamb is come and his wife hath made herself ready." Hitchcock observed that the relation between Christ and the church is often represented in scripture by images of marriage and asked "in what respect a preparation to meet Christ at his marriage supper in heaven differs from a preparation to meet him at his supper on earth?" The answer is one of degree only. Hitchcock stated that there are two general ideas which describe the preparation a Christian must make in order to approach the Lord's table: "he must possess holiness or righteousness in himself &...he must have received the righteousness of Christ." Hitchcock proceeded to "describe more particularly the effects of these principles" by discussing nine characteristics essential to believer's readiness for the communion table. Hitchcock noted on the first page the dates and places where he had delivered this sermon between 1822 and 1825 as well as hymns related to the sermon. |
