Abstract
Notes by Edward Hitchcock satirically discussing the hardships of farmers in Hampshire County. Hitchcock notes that the soil is difficult to cultivate, which means farmers must work harder. This hard work results in men not having time to amuse themselves with things like drinking and bowling, leaving reading as the only amusement and thus making the farmers more educated people who are interested in government, religion, and morality. Since these are the results of hardship, Hitchcock concludes with a wish that the hardships upon farmers in the region increase.
