Dates | 1822-12 |
Abstract | Edward Hitchcock's sermon on steadfastness in religion, based on Galatians 5:7 ("Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth"). Hitchcock directed attention to the "marks of inconstancy" with regard to both the belief and the practice of religion, and to enumerate the "consequences of inconstancy" in a believer's faith. He stated that "it is the duty of all Christians to aim at a perfect consistency & uniformity of character - and the more irregular they are in their exercises and actions the farther are they from the standard of the Gospel." Hitchcock noted on the first page that he had delivered this sermon once as well as hymns related to the sermon. |
