Abstract | Eli B. Hamilton letter to James Fowler of the Massachusetts State Legislature in which Hamilton writes regarding the result of the petition in the Senate made by the Trustees of Amherst Academy requesting the incorporation of Amherst College, also known as the Collegiate Institution of Amherst during this time. Hamilton offers his opinions on the topic and on the sides represented by particular legislators. He is critical of their decision and feels that by chartering the College they have "licensed a brood of miscreants to harass and interrupt the labors of the industrious." Hamilton goes on to share his thoughts on other recent discussions and decisions in the legislature including the candidate for president, Sprague's resolutions and the resolve of 1813, among other subjects. |
