Amherst College was conceived out of the previously existing Amherst Academy and was founded in 1821 as the Collegiate Institution. From 1821-1825 the College was known primarily as the Collegiate Institution or the Amherst Institution. In 1825 the institution was granted charter by the Massachusetts State Legislature and was thereafter known as Amherst College.

Abstract
Collegiate Charity Institution subscription pamphlet for the fund that was commonly called the Thirty Thousand Dollar Subscription. The pamphlet includes introductory text dated June 28, 1822 in which background on the Institution and the fund obtained for its establishment is provided along with details on the obligations of undersigned subscribers to the fund. Subsequently, a table with columns labeled for subscribers' names, residences, sums to be paid each year, and amounts paid for years 1823-1827 is provided. The table has not been filled in.
