Statement on Harmful Content

Amherst College Library has digitized materials from our Archives and Special Collections to make them available for use. Some items in the collections contain offensive or harmful images or language. We acknowledge that we risk harmful impacts when we share material that represents the history of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) and other marginalized student populations alongside histories of racism and other harm evident in the collection. We have decided to make these materials available despite this risk to provide a comprehensive, transparent view of the College’s history. We feel it is important to make these materials available to anyone who wants to view them, especially people who aren’t able to travel to the archives to see them, or who are more comfortable accessing collections online. If you have questions about materials or descriptions, we encourage you to let us know through our Contact page.

For more information about how we select which collections are digitized, see our Digital Collection Development Policy.
