Amherst College was conceived out of the previously existing Amherst Academy and was founded in 1821 as the Collegiate Institution. From 1821-1825 the College was known primarily as the Collegiate Institution or the Amherst Institution. Occasionally during this time period, it was called Amherst College. In 1825 the institution was granted charter by the Massachusetts State Legislature and was thereafter known as Amherst College.

Abstract
Asa Eaton letter to Zephaniah Swift Moore in which Eaton writes as clerk and on behalf of the Directors of the American Education Society. He states when the directors met on the 10th, Amherst College was appointed an examining committee of the Board and the young men recommended by Moore on October 1 were placed on their list of beneficiaries. He goes on to provide details regarding these students and the appropriations they will receive, including listing their names and aid amounts. He closes by certifying that the named students are beneficiaries of the American Education Society.
