An undated letter to Henry J. Gardner, Governor of Massachusetts, in which Edward Hitchcock discusses his progress on a geological survey of Massachusetts, explaining why he has given his preliminary results to the Smithsonian Institution and not to the government of Massachusetts. The letter has been determined to have been written circa 1855.
