Abstract
Two letters to Edward Hitchcock, Jr., from members of the Hitchcock family, written while Hitchcock Jr. was traveling in Switzerland. The first letter, written by Edward Hitchcock and signed by Orra White Hitchcock, Catharine Hitchcock Storrs, Jane Elizabeth Hitchcock Putnam, and Emily Hitchcock, is dated October 6, 1860. In it, Hitchcock asks after Hitchcock Jr.'s trip, writes about small family matters, and mentions a trip the senior class at Amherst College will be taking to Vermont to study geology. The letter dated October 13, 1860, is written by Edward Hitchcock, Charles H. Hitchcock and Jane Elizabeth Hitchcock Putnam. Charles writes about naming a mountain Mount Eolus in Vermont, and writes about taking home a "pocketful of bats" from the cave there. Jane inquires after Hitchcock Jr.'s journey.
