Abstract
Edward Hitchcock's Sermon No. 151 on idolatry, based on Exodus 20:3 ("Thou shalt have no other gods before me"). Hitchcock noted on the first page the dates and places where he had delivered this sermon between 1823 and 1843 as well as Bible chapters and hymns related to the sermon. This sermon was derived from the same biblical text and shared the same title as Sermon 152, but according to the dates and places recorded, was not always delivered in tandem with and was delivered more frequently than Sermon No. 152. In Sermon 151, Hitchcock presented a history of heathen idolatry, whose roots could be traced back to the descendants of Noah. An initial reverence for Noah expanded to include other prominent members of society and eventually embraced untold numbers of animate and inanimate objects. Worship of an object transformed into worship of an image of the object, a practice which insinuated itself into the Christian Church. Hitchcock inferred from this history the natural course of mankind and the necessity of divine revelation. He noted that he would continue with his remarks in the afternoon. He concluded his sermon with a substantial quote from "a late distinguished writer," Timothy Dwight, whose sermon on the second commandment covered the same topic.
