Abstract
Edward Hitchcock's communion sermon comparing the parable of the marriage feast to the Kingdom of Heaven, based on Matthew 22:1-14. Hitchcock noted on the first page the three dates and places where he had delivered this sermon between 1823 and 1832 as well as hymns related to the sermon. Hitchcock began by describing a parable and its purpose. He also mentioned the various ways in which the phrase "Kingdom of Heaven" had been used the New Testament, its meaning in the parable and in his sermon. The focus of the sermon was the points of resemblance between the marriage feast and the Kingdom of Heaven. As his discussion progressed, Hitchcock also introduced into the comparison the communion table around which his congregation had gathered.
