Abstract
Sermon notes by Edward Hitchcock for a sermon delivered at Amherst College in May 1859 on the passive virtues of suffering affliction and patience. Considering James 5:10, Hitchcock contrasts the passive virtues with the active virtues of love, justice, patriotism, charity, forgiveness, piety, and kindness. Stating that the passive virtues do not receive the attention they deserve in sermons, he expands on the importance and difficulty of these virtues. Hitchcock has written related hymns on the last page.
