Two orations by Edward Hitchcock extracted from "Discourses and Addresses at the Installation and Inauguration of the Rev. William A. Stearns, D.D., as President of Amherst College, and Pastor of the College Church," as well as the introduction to the text. In "Charge at the Installation," Hitchcock describes the specific ministerial needs of a "literary community" like Amherst College and the role of the College pastor. In "Address on Retiring from the Presidency," he discusses Amherst College's history and development, including his personal reflections and experiences of the College as well.
