Abstract
Notes by Edward Hitchcock discussing the state of missions in South Africa. Hitchcock briefly describes the landscape, some of the vegetation and animal life, the inhabitants, and the state of religion in the country, quoting various texts. He then goes on to list how many stations, missionaries, and church members various missionary societies have in South Africa. He concludes with the total numbers and a lament of the way that war has hindered missions and missionaries in South Africa. Hitchcock has written "Amherst College June 1847," which suggests the lecture was given at Amherst College.
