Abstract
Notes by Edward Hitchcock on a Temperance Convention in 1836 and a temperance meeting in 1837. The notes discuss the importance of pledging to abstain from all alcoholic beverages for the success of the temperance movement. Hitchcock notes the progress that has been made by people pledging to abstain from spirits, but writes that wine and other alcoholic beverages must now also be excluded from consumption. He lists several temperance societies and conventions which have adopted such a pledge, and emphasizes the importance that it be adopted by all. He then discusses a beverage he refers to as "Amherst Tea" and its benefits.
