Abstract
Incomplete notes by Edward Hitchcock listing different motives for living a temperate life and providing explanations for those motives. The first item in the list is missing and part of the second reason listed is illegible. Hitchcock claims that chemistry, physiology, morality, and religion all favor temperance, that practicing temperance sets a good example, and that abstaining from alcohol increases happiness.
