Abstract
Photographs of National Student Strike events at Amherst College. Included are images of various rallies, meetings, marches, workshops, and lectures that took place across the Town of Amherst and on the Amherst College campus. Identified specific events photographed include a Conscientious Objector program, the March on UMass, the March on Amherst Savings Bank, and a Women's Liberation group meeting. Participants are photographed in various locations, including the Main Quadrangle (also known as the first-year quad), the Octagon, Valentine Quad, Johnson Chapel, Cole Assembly Room of Converse Hall, a classroom in Chapin Hall, the Town Common, and Amherst Savings Bank. Images of a hand statue on the War Memorial and strike posters on the Noah Webster statue are also among the photographs. Individuals photographed include Francis Crowe, Jan E. Dizard, and Arnold Collery. Speakers and leaders such as George Kateb, John Froines, Henry Steele Commager, Leo Marx, and Bob Ellenport may also be among those photographed. Some photographs were taken by Robert Cornigans and others are presumed to have been taken by Jim Gerhard who was the College Photographer from the mid-1960s to 1971.
