Abstract
Edward Hitchcock's Sermon No. 152 on idolatry, based on Exodus 20:3 ("Thou shalt have no other gods before me"). Hitchcock noted on the first page the dates and places where he had delivered this sermon between 1823 and 1837 as well as Bible chapters and hymns related to the sermon. This sermon was derived from the same biblical text and shared the same title as Sermon 151, but according to the dates and places recorded, was not always delivered in tandem with nor as frequently as Sermon No. 151. In Sermon 152, Hitchcock warned that his remarks from the morning about heathen idolatry from were not complete. He remarked that idolatry - bestowing supreme regard on anything other than God - was exceedingly prevalent in Christian lands and was often very close at hand, providing examples of its practice. He noted that this worship of false gods in disobedience of the teachings and warnings of scripture incurred aggravated quilt. Hitchcock drew attention to the coffin in the sanctuary as proof that nothing on earth was worthy of supreme regard. He warned that those who strived to serve God and Mammon would not be saved from the wrath to come.
