Abstract | A pamphlet of an unattributed statement opposing the Collegiate Institution's petition for incorporation based on evidence presented regarding the Charity Fund subscriptions, subscriptions to the fund commonly called the Thirty Thousand Dollar Subscription, and the financial state of the Institution along with testimonies from disgruntled fund subscribers. The appendix to the pamphlet includes written statements or letters from specific fund subscribers: Samuel Austin, John Hooker, James Gould, Thomas Snow, Simeon Ballard, William Ballard, Gideon Moody, Joseph Carew, Jared Hawks, Jr., Henry Sargent, William B. Wesson, Thomas Moody, Jotham Clark, Aaron Smith, Thomas Powers, William Walker, Samuel Warren, Philip Davis, and John Warner. Jona Allen, Samuel Church, Sylvester Maxwell, Charles Ferry, William B. Calhoun, I.C. Bates, Daniel Notes, Daniel Ruggles, Laban Marcy, and William Billings are Justices of the Peace who are noted as having verified statements in the appendix. |
Notes | Amherst College was conceived out of the previously existing Amherst Academy and was founded in 1821 as the Collegiate Institution. From 1821-1825 the College was known primarily as the Collegiate Institution or the Amherst Institution. In 1825 the institution was granted charter by the Massachusetts State Legislature and was thereafter known as Amherst College. |
